Awards for which full papers are invited:
1. Pitabus-Jamuna Burma Memorial medal papers
Dr. D.P. Burma, Professor of Biochemistry, Institute of Medical Sciences, Benaras Hindu University and Presidnet of ACBI in 1978, instituted the award in memory of his father and mother.
Any member including sessional member whose age is less then 35 years as on 31st December of the year, is eligible to take part in the contest.
The applicants have to submit a write up (no more than 2000 words) on a original research work in medicine based on approaches in Biochemistry or Molecular Biology, published by any other author / authors excluding himself and his group in any prestigious journal of the world, in the preceding one year. Application along with (1) 4 typed / photo copies of the write up (2) 4 photocopies of the original paper, (3) documentary evidence of age and (4) proof of life membership or of continuous membership of ACBI of at least 3 years. The paper should be submitted to the Organizing Secretary before the deadline.
2. Sita Devi Award papers
The award was created by a donation from Dr. C. Sita Devi, the President of ACBI (1980) for presentation of scientific work related to Clinical Biochemistry.
3. P.S. Murthy Award
For Best paper in the field of (1) infectious diseases, and (2) development of drugs from plant sources.
This award was created by a donation from Prof. P.S. Murty, Professor of Biochemistry, UCMS, New Delhi and President of ACBI in 1993. Papers for this award are invited under 2 categories, i.e. (1) Infectious Diseases, and (2) Development of Drugs. One best paper in each category is awarded certificate and cash. If no paper under one category is available or considered worthy, then both awards shall go to two top papers of the other category. In case no paper in either category is considered worthy, then similar papers in Poster Sessions will be considered for the award.
4. MGIMS award
For Best paper in the field of tropical diseases.
This award was created in the year 1994 by a donation by Dr. B.C. Harinath, Professor of Biochemistry, MGIMS, Sevagram and President of ACBI (1994). The award is open for original work in Biochemical/Immunological/Molecular aspects of Tropical Diseases. In case no paper is considered worthy, then similar papers in Poster Sessions shall be considered for the award.
5. NIMS award for the best poster
The award was instituted in 1994 by a donation from Dr. T. Malati, Professor of Biochemistry, NIMS, Hyderabad and President of ACBI (1993). There are 2 awards One award is for the best poster in the field of Cancer and another in Non-Cancer field.
How to apply for Award Papers:
The applicant should send full paper to the Organizing Secretary so as to reach him before the due date of submission as mentioned in instructions. He/She shall submit (1) 4 typed / photo copies of the paper along with abstract of the paper in the manner as mentioned earlier (2) documentary evidence of age (Less then 35 years). (3) proof of membership of ACBI (4) no objection certificate from co-authors, if any, to reach the Organizing Secretary before the dead line for submission.
The award papers shall be evaluated by Scientific Committee of the conference. On the basis of evaluation, the Organizing Secretary shall select 2 best papers for each award and inform the authors to present them at a special session for award papers before 3 judges selected for this purpose. Each presentation shall not be of more than 7 minutes duration. After presentation of each paper, 3 minutes shall be devoted to the discussion by the judges and the audience.
Who can apply: Any member including Sessional Member, whose age on 31st December 2008 is below 35 years, is eligible to take part in the contest.
Certificate and prizes: The winner of the award shall be given a cash award and a certificate at the Valedictory function of ACBICON 2008.
Poster Awards from Organizing Committee: Organizing committee shall also announce 10 or more awards for visually excellent posters and the process of selection will be the same judges of the Award Committee. Awarded Poster shall also be orally presented.
ACBI Travel Fellowship: Limited number of Travel Fellowship awards are available to support needy students and young delegates presenting papers in the conference. Travel Fellowship Fund was created by handsome donations from Dr. A.S. Kanagasabapathy, Organizing Secretary of 26th ACBI Conference held at CMC Vellore, Dr. A.S. Thakur, Organizing Secretary of QC Workshop held at AIIMS, New Delhi in 2002 and Mr. S.K. Manhar of M/s Priman Instruments, New Delhi.
The young needy member delegates, including sessional members whose age is below 35 years as on 31st December 2008 and have submitted paper for presentation, are eligible to apply. Those interested to apply should write to the Secretary, ACBI, Dr. M.V.R. Reddy, Professor and Head, Department of Bicochemistry, MGIMS, Sevagram 442102, giving membership number, evidence of submission of paper and delegate fee and amount of one way rail fare by Sleeper Class by 15th October 2008. The applicant has to give an undertaking that he / she has not received any assistance from any other source including his or her institution. The grant is limited to return 3 tier (non-AC) rail fare but not exceeding Rs.1000.
Important Note:
1. Please send your Abstract along with the conference registration fee.
2. P.G. trainees / students need to submit certificate by their Head of the Department and countersigned by Dean / Principal.
3. Children above the age of 12 years will have to be registered as ’Accompanying person’ @ 50% of the registration fee.
4. Student registration is compulsory with abstract or participation in Quiz.
5. Acceptance of the paper will be communicated to the presenting author by Conference Secretariat latest by 1st November 2008. The early submission of abstracts will make it easier for the reviewing committee to communicate earlier. Giving your email ID will ensure prompt communication.
6. Please collect your money receipt from the registration counter while registering yourself.
Scholarships for Young Clinical Biochemists
Young Clinical Biochemists aged 35 or less on November 1, 2008 may apply to receive a scholarship consisting of Registration Fees for the Congress and 3 nights accommodation (sharing with another scholarship recipient).
Applicants must have an abstract accepted by the Scientific Committee and be a resident of a country as per the list on the following link www.acbicon2008.com
Applicants receiving accommodation and registration support from any other source will not be eligible.
Please apply while submitting your abstract online. A scanned copy of your passport showing your date of birth must be sent by Email to acbicon2008@gmail.com or gkrishnajyoti@gmail.com.
Important note: your request will only be considered if submitted at the time of abstract submission.
Deadline for submission of abstracts is 31 May 2008.
Scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of abstract evaluation by the Conference Scientific Committee.
Applicants who have been granted a scholarship will be informed well before elapse of the early registration fee deadline.
Post Graduate Quiz
Dear PG Students,
Would you like to match your brains and knowledge with those of your colleagues across the SAARC countries? Then come and participate in the Biochemistry Quiz to be held during the ACBICON in December 2008. Since two heads are better than one it has been decided to keep teams instead of individuals. A team will consist of two students.
In order to be eligible for entering the quiz, the student must be studying for M.Sc. Biochemistry / Medical Biochemistry or M.D. Biochemistry and should pay a nominal entry fee of Rs.100/- (each member). The entries should reach the Organizing Secretary, ACBICON 2008 along with registration form. The teams could be formed from the registered members at the registration venue.
There will be two prizes for the teams standing 1st and 2nd and two consolation prizes for teams coming 3rd and 4th. Common areas of the M.Sc. / M.D. syllabus will be touched upon.
Heads of departments from all Medical Colleges may encourage maximum number of PG students to participate in the Quiz.
Detailed instructions for the conduct of quiz will be handed over to the participants on arrival at venue. To know how much you know, come join the quiz, have fun and get attractive prizes.
